Setting: Doctor Who is set in a universe in which everywhere and everywhen is completely accessible. The canon universe revolved around the Doctor, a time travelling alien, and his human companion as they go around the entire universe on adventures. There are so many settings, it's near impossible to name them all. The most important ones are as follows.

Gallifrey: Located in the constellation of Kasterborous, at galactic co-ordinates 10-0-11-0-0 by 0-2 from Galactic Zero Centre. It's sometimes known as the shining world of seven systems and the dead centre of the universe. The sky is brunt-orange and the grass is a deep red, the plant life ranges in colour from golden to silver, sometimes even green. On Gallifrey is the oldest and most powerful race in the cosmos, the Time Lords. Gallifrey has a vast history that ties into so many of the big events in the universe. From early age those born to be Time Lords are trained and educated in their ways, brought up to capable of carrying on this legacy. This is the Doctor planet of origin. At the current point in canon, however, Gallifrey itself was lost to the Time War. Locked away and considered gone forever. The Doctor is seen to be the lone survivor of his race, the last of the Time Lords. It is worth noting, however, that he had never truly fitted in with his own race. He was seen as a Renegade Time Lord while they were about and even ran away the first chance he got.

Time Lords:The Time Lords are an all powerful and near God like race. They're one of the oldest races in the universe and one of the wisest yet they often avoid intervening when needed. Some claim they are too bureaucratic for their own good. They're humanoid in appearance but with somewhat altered biology that sets them apart. The Time Lord's and the Doctor never did have the same wavelength, hence him leaving at an early age to get away from them. He never considered having a childhood there and all the rules didn't sit right with him. The Time Lord's did come to appreciate that the Doctor could do things they didn't have the time for or didn't deem worthy, like saving the universe or preventing certain incidents in time. When the great Time War took place, the Time Lords fought for survival and became warped and desperate, near insane at the idea of being wiped out. The Doctor claims that by the end, they weren't the same. They were mad and dangerous, that's why he locked them away. Being the last of the Time Lords, the Doctor often paints a picture of the complete opposite of what they were. Where the Time Lord's were stubborn, unadventurous and bureaucrats, he is a lot more carefree and adventurous, love and appreciate the universe more than they ever did. However, one thing he has that all Time Lords have is that dangerous ego that is always threatening to go over the edge.

The TARDIS: Time travel is an important part of Doctor Who. The ability to go anywhere in the universe at any time is perhaps why it's managed to be such a long lasting canon. It's hard to get stale when there's so much to see. For the Doctor to get all those places, he has a very handy-dandy time machine otherwise known as the TARDIS. That stands for 'Time And Relative Dimensions In Space. The TARDIS itself is a sentient machine that is vastly bigger on the inside thanks to transdimensional engineering, allowing it to masquerade as a simple and unnoticeable police box. Nearly all Time Lord's have a TARDIS and while most pass an exam and get one of the proper way, the Doctor merely stole his. Or she stole him. It's honestly debatable who did what. She is riddled with quirks and flaws, constantly sending the Doctor to the wrong place, occasionally malfunctioning or not working. She maybe old and a little worse for wear but in the end, she always gets him where he truly needs to be.

Earth: With the TARDIS, the Doctor and his companion have access to all of the universe. Every shining star, bright nebula and sparkling moon. Planets with singing fish, intelligent sand, people of smoke or seven suns. And where does the Doctor always go? Earth. Usually London too. Even from the start of his travels, the Doctor developed a sort of love affair with Earth. It's his home away from home. Nearly all his companions are Earthlings and many of his greatest battles take place there.

The Silence: For the Eleventh Doctor's arc, the most important aspect has been the Silence and what they represent. They are a religious order or movement primary represented by a group of aliens that are instantly forgotten when eye contact is broken, making them an incredibly awkward foe. To keep track of them, the Doctor and his companions mark tallies on their arms or use recording devices to keep track. The ominous and constantly reference quote 'Silence will fall' has been a recurring theme since Eleven's start and seems to reference the prophecy that when the oldest question in the universe is answered, silence will fall. And as the Doctor seems to be predestined to answer said question, he is their constant target. And what is the question? Welp, it's apparently Doctor Who?

Other Villains of note: With Eleven incarnations and over a thousand years under his belt, the Doctor has many foes and they're always worth a mention. First are the Daleks, considered his most consistent and unstoppable enemy. A cautionary tale in eugenics, the Daleks are beings without a conscience and only accept those exactly like them. There is no place for beautiful, mercy or morality for these creatures. Same could be said for the Cybermen, another persistent enemy of the Doctor's. The Cybermen are a race of cyborgs that function on hard cold logic and purge every emotion from their being. They constantly 'upgrade' and change their appearance, assimilating innocent humans as they go. Lastly, it's worth bring up the only other potentially returning Time Lord, the Master. A meddlesome and very insane Time Lord that often stalks him around the universe, obsessed with destroying him. Once friends, now 'best enemies', the Master frequently crops up in the whoniverse to pester the Doctor. Other recurring villains include Sontarans, Siliarians and the Weeping Angels. All of which can be elaborated on if needed.

Companions: Every Doctor has a whole host of companions, humans or otherwise, that travel with him to see and experience his adventures. They see the universe, enjoy his company and let him show off to them in all sorts of fantastical ways. They are considered the relatable character which we can see the universe through, someone who is just as amazed and confused as we are. Without a companion, the Doctor doesn't function very well, they're good for keeping him in line and making sure his feet stay on the ground otherwise he tends to go off the rails a little. They also cause some considerable heartache for him when they leave.

Sonic Screwdriver It has been there since the beginning and is the Doctor's most trusted tool. The sonic screwdriver is basically a very advanced and useful lockpick, capable of getting into nearly everything. The exception usually being either wood or deadlock seals. It can also control other electronic devices, be used as a tracking device or take evaluations or medical readings. Also put two of them together and they make a hell of a sound. The rule of the series is that they can't be used as a way to cheat out of situations so there are often a lot of circumstantial limitations in a crisis.

Torchwood Institute: The Torchwood institute is a secret organisation established 1879 by Queen Victoria. It was set up to help control and prevent the paranormal or alien threat that was brought into their scope by the Doctor. It seems to have it's own authority and is somewhat in league with UNIT, another organisation in the Who universe that investigations and combats the threat of aliens or the paranormal as well. Cause why have one when you can have two? They could be said to have an unhealthy obsession with the Doctor and the perceived 'threat' he holds. By the time the Eleventh Doctor's era began, Torchwood was all but ended as the first Torchwood fell against the cybermen, the second Torchwood was lost and the third one was mostly eliminated. The only survivors of the organisation are now Jack Harkness and Gwen, neither of which this incarnation has met yet. They are no longer in play these days. But then not many people in Torchwood live past 30 so it's not really a shock.

Personality: The most noticeable thing about the Doctor's personality is now and always has been his eccentric nature. Eleven is far from a shy or quiet man, he has a streak of bizarre quirks and weird mannerisms that often throw people off. He likes to describe himself as a mad man with a box and that is a rather accurate description of this regeneration. He doesn't seem to have a sense of social awareness and just does as he pleases. He can ramble on for ages about his own things without even realising what is right there in front of him. Because of this, he really doesn't blend in well around your average human. Instead of being in touch with humanity like the Tenth regeneration was, Eleven is far more alien.

He randomly becomes obsessed with the strangest accessories like bowties and fezzes, he often goes off a tangents that make no sense, licks things he shouldn't, goes places he shouldn't and generally just blunders into deadly situations. And yet through it all, there's a strange sort of method among all this madness, a hidden spark of knowing and intelligence. Beyond his childishness and strange quirks lies a old man. A very old man who has seen so much and experiences such heartbreak and loss that it does weigh him down.

Inside, he is a wise old man despite his boyish appearance. He knows the harsh realities of the universe by now and he can try to impart what knowledge he can. He has a strong set of morals and ethics built up over time, he has many years worth of mistakes now that he has learned a lot more than the average human ever would. It isn't hard to see why he lives like the weight of the whole universe is on his shoulders because after all these years of saving people and doing the right thing, it hasn't ended. And it probably never will for him. It's not just a way to do good deeds any more, it's a way of life for the Doctor and he seems to carry that burden single handedly.

Rather than opening up, he holds back on everything and tries to dismiss his past and his darker sides in favour of childish playfulness. He doesn't enjoy the concept of adult life or being forced to act like a 'grown up' as it seems to almost take the fun out of everything - despite the fact that he is generally the oldest man in the room. As ever, the Doctor is very energetic and active, seeming willing and ready for anything with a careless manner to his actions. He is definitely a brash and daring regeneration. Much like his previous regenerations, he is brilliant beyond measure and often boasts his intelligence, especially to his human companion.

His arrogance can be a draw back, going as far as to speak down to humans and act as if he is naturally meant to be above them. Though he isn't always intentionally trying to be rude, he can be fairly aloof and unaware of his own short comings, accidentally being too frank more often than is needed. The Doctor had openly admitted that more than once he has done things motived simply by his own vanity and ego. It's perhaps why he has to have companions with him, he likes to show off and be almost worshipped by them.

The Doctor has this ability to show them the whole universe and he doesn't always consider the negative implications this can have on his companions after travelling with him. Some don't ever adjust well afterwards, some can't simply have a normal life again and others are scarred by it all. He can be selfish in that respect, unable to realise the damage and danger he puts them all in and the full implications until it comes back to haunt him.

However, with all his arrogance and ego, there is no one in the universe that hates the Doctor as much as himself. He doesn't believe himself a good man and see himself more as a danger to those he loves. He knows he's selfish and while he can't help but constantly repeat the same patterns in his life, he seems to be unstoppably guilty about it. He doesn't like taking companions as much any more because he fears that he will cause them harm in the end and after everything he's done to people, he seems unable to work passed this. While he may have come more to terms with everything that has happened in the past with the Time War, the traumas he's caused his companions seems to stay with him deeply.

The Doctor is, of course, a terrifyingly complicated and complex man, summing up who he is mentally would take a team of the best psychologists in the universe and then some. There are so many flaws and contradictions to who he is and how he thinks. He is ridiculously flippant and he is known to have a change of heart more than once. There are some many different motivations and explanations for why he does what he does that sometimes its hard to know what does make the Doctor the Doctor. Its all part of the mystery.

The Doctor will have no trouble accepting the news that he is In Between as stranger things have happened. Little unsettling to be in that position but can't say it's not something that would intrigue him. New situations are always like a gift to him and his curiosity will be peeked. Well, initially. This isn't to say he won't have mixed feelings, the idea of being trapped somewhere will take a while to accept and believe but once it does, he won't be happy. He has never been able to adapt to a life in one place and the limitations are just too binding for him. On top of that, he wouldn't exactly appreciate being forced anywhere against his will, especially since his TARDIS will likely be lost in all his madness. As adventurous as the Doctor is, when it all comes to a calm and the turtle becomes old news, he will soon turn on the idea of being In Between.

Appearance: Picture here

Abilities: The Doctor is not human but rather an alien from the planet Gallifrey and this is what sets him apart from most. As a Time Lord, the Doctor has an outstanding knowledge of time and space, beyond that of even the smartest men on Earth. They study for centuries at the Time Lord academy and therefore they are naturally more intelligent and worldly, with better understanding and awareness of the universe and time travel. The Doctor has extensive knowledge of science, engineering, languages and literature. To name a few anyway.

Time Lords also benefit from having regenerations. Conventionally, most Time Lords have 12 regenerations in total but some have proven exceptions to the rule. Generally they allow a Time Lord a sort of 'get out of jail free' card when it comes to death. The catch being that they often change personality, preferences and appearance though retain the same memories and knowledge. This process can also be done by will and some Time Lords have previously displayed a higher level of control on what body they get. The Doctor, however, clearly has zero control as he can never quite predict what's going to happen next. Often he can become erratic or manic after a regeneration, bordering on dangerous.

The Doctor's appearance is humanoid (or more accurately, humanities appearance is very Time lord-ish) but his biology differs greatly in many respects. He has two hearts, a repository bypass, a naturally lower body temperature than humans, an ability to withstand radiation and better hearing and sense of smell. All Time Lords have a mild telepathy in canon and though the strength of it varies greatly from Time Lord to Time Lord, it's usually initiated by touch. The Doctor is not as skilled as some Time Lords, like perhaps the Master, a fellow Time Lord capable of manipulating entire races. But he does show to have some level of skill, capable of wiping memories or tuning himself into a psychic network.

A master tinkerer, the Doctor is capable of building whatever he needs from whatever he can find. He's an expert with technology and a lot of the devices he uses are his own creations. The sonic screwdriver, for example, is capable of opening most locks and gathering whatever date he needs. The perfect asset for a man like himself.

Oh and he can talk to animals and babies.

Inventory: The first and most important possession he has a sonic screwdriver. This is a handy device allows him to open and lock doors, as well as several other functions such as scanning objects, repairing broken tech and sending signals. It doesn't work on wood, sadly.

Then the Doctor has something called infinite pockets where he keeps-- well, everything. The rough idea would be that he has needless nonsense in there like jelly babies, a yoyo, a ball of string, three pennies, a barbie doll, some marble and so on. Nothing ground breaking or plot altering, they can be somehow 'left behind' if need be. Along with all of that is a key to his TARDIS and psychic paper, which a white piece of card capable of showing whatever the owner wish others to see. It does not, however, work on geniuses.

Suite: The Doctor would probably be best suited in the metal sector as he would be right at home among the thinkers and tinkerers. He would appreciate the ability of having more up to date technology near him as most of his life has been filled with time saving gadgets and handy devices. It's where he'd feel most at home. And he always did suit otherworldy type areas.

Third Person:

“So anyway, I told the Royal Sovereign that if he wanted his gold shoes back then he has to start being nicer to his people. And it worked out fantastically. Erm, well, as fantastically as it can with a murderous dictator… which is that I wasn’t instantly killed by his guards but I was banished for life,” the Doctor rambled to his newest friend as he relaxed in the sunshine of the wonderfully bright day he’d had the luck of landing in on. He’d staked out a spot sitting on a stone wall along the neighbourhood park, enjoying the view of all the happy families making the most of the weather. Playing with kites, walking dogs, playing footie! Ah, 21st century Earth, there was nowhere better to relax and embrace life. He’d had a hell of a year, trying to just -- well, keep going. Not look back this time, not get caught up in anything. Harder than it sounded. It wasn’t that he didn’t love the mayhem and chaos of travelling with some faithful companion but after Amy and Rory? He couldn't bring himself to consider it. It just left an unease in his stomach.

How could he keep doing something he was so bad at? He was a repeat offender for the accidental endangerment of human companions. Blimey. He shouldn’t phrase it like that, he really shouldn’t. Made them sound like pets!

And besides, it wasn’t always entirely and utterly his all the time. Just most of the time. It wasn’t like humans didn’t have the free will to decline his offer. With a mild dismissive noise, he put that train of thought aside and leaned back slightly, watching the blue sky, feet swinging playfully back and forth in front of him. It wasn't worth thinking over, he'd done that for longer than he was proud of and it'd got him nowhere fast

“Perhaps I should take you with me? All of time and space? Anywhere and anytime? Don't imagine you're quite as imaginative as humans can be, no offence. They always have such curious minds, eager to see it all and do everything. Good attitude to have!"

Exhaling loudly, he gave his silent friend a small shrug. It had been a good year, despite everything else. He’d met Caligula and ran for his life, went for with drinks with Einstein and successfully confused one of the brightest minds in the 20th century, a few raids on Devaka and and a treasure hunt on the Ood Sphere. He would of told his captive audience more but once he got started on the vast beauty of the never ending and always expanding universe, it was very hard for him to stop. And he didn't exhale have all day

“It could of been wor-- Oi! Could you stop that? I’m all right with the swapping of stories and everything but I draw the line at hand licking. No offence but I don’t know where your tongues been. And you don't know where my hands been either-- nowhere good, I promise you. Can't we just have a civil discussion without this nonsense,” the Doctor lectured as he lifted up the cat he’d been chatting away to for the past three hours. Hey, sometimes he just had to talk to someone and if a friendly face offered some time, why wouldn’t he? He could always trust cats; they were easy to talk to. Though they had some rather negative fascist views on humanity that really needed to be worked on. “Sadly, I don’t think you and I would work well together. I mean, you’d be a much easier companion but I just don’t like the way you keep nibbling my tweed, bound to make holes. But I do wish you luck with that loud dog next door.”

Jumping off the wall, he grinned and set the cat back onto the wall, backing up slowly and offering a wave. Couldn't dally around all day talking to the locals, had to be off. Never stopping, never staying. That was for the best. He looked around the bustling movement of 21st century park once more with a fond smile on his face. All those people rushing to someone, heading off to do something, all together and happy. Just how it was meant to be.

He thought of Amy and Rory once more. And he truly felt alone.

Network:
Hello Tu Vishan! I assume I'm pronouncing that right? Well, anyway, I hope someone out there is listening or else I'm going to look awfully daft. If you feel like saying hello, that'd be nice. Don't be shy, I'm lovely-- or so I'm told. I can provide references.

[The man in the centre of the video is a rather odd looking man with a goofy smile plastered on his face, just rambling away. He leans back a bit to get as much as himself into frame as possible, red bowtie just managing to get a tiny bit of screen time. Just wasn't right if it didn't.]

I think someone out there has been sneaking a peak at my Christmas list again. A mysterious and unexplainable trip to an island on the back of a giant turtle? Oooh, it's just brilliant. Fantastic even! Intergalactic kidnapping aside, this is definitely my kind of place.

[He couldn't claim to be thrilled about the whole stolen from where he was meant to be to here now but hey, who wouldn't be impressed with a giant turtle-land?]

But back onto the topic of this whole kidnapping thing? Little unneeded, don't you agree? You could of just asked nicely, I probably would of turned up freely anyway. Or, you know, sent out invites? Those papery card things they send out for special occasions. They're always a must for things like this, people do appreciate them. You can get fun ones too. Like in the shape of a turtle with maybe an open-able shell! -- Or is that a little on the nose?

[There's a slight pause of contemplation.] Still, better than being rude. No one likes rude. Trust me.

Oh! And I never did introduce myself, did I? I got a bit caught up in other stuff, kidnappings are always such a hectic time. I'm the Doctor. Just the Doctor. And I'm very eager to talk.
